What is a Genuine Eccentric?

To the world-weary traveller, the global village means a McDonald's sameness (1) ... inflicted everywhere, the jumbo jet wheel smoothing (2) ... the bumps in cultures, making everything universally bland. Today, someone wearing branded American cowboy denims, Korean plastic trainers and an Italian T-shirt could equally be in Dusseldorf, Detroit or Danang. And yet the British – particularly, but not exclusively, the English – eccentric has proved peculiarly resistant (3) ... this process, thank God. True eccentrics don't think of themselves as (4) ... .
They know they are reasonable and it is the rest of the world (5) ... is bizarre. They are usually loners, experts say. The top eccentric academic, Edinburgh's Dr David Weeks, says eccentrics (6) ... live longer because they are saner and happier than the rest of us. He has (7) ... up with a figure of one in 10,000 Brits being eccentric. A genuine eccentric does not consciously adopt an odd style or mode of behaviour for effect. Students doing a sponsored pogo-stick over the Andes wouldn't qualify, and (8) ... do young fogies, punks, or others adopting what is merely a different kind of uniform.
