Questions 1-10
Excerpt from "Great Expectations" by Charles Dickens
In the little world in which children have their existence, whosoever brings them up, there is nothing so finely perceived and finely felt, as injustice. It may be only small injustice that the child can be exposed to; but the child is small, and its world is small, and its rocking-horse stands as many hands high, according to scale, as a big-boned Irish hunter.
Within myself, I had sustained, from my babyhood, a perpetual conflict with injustice. I had known, from the time when I could speak, that my sister, in her capricious and violent coercion, was unjust to me. And yet I had a strong conviction that she was not to be blamed for this. I knew that she loved me, though I could not display any definite reason for my knowing it.
I knew that she was unjust to me and yet I believed that her intentions were good. It is very curious and very interesting, to observe that in a child’s mind, its perception of what is right, or its perception of what is wrong, is so fine, that in the whole hierarchy of human creatures, it makes no person, a mere person, more calculated to be the object of a child’s love or hate, than the one who governs it with a spirit of justice, or otherwise.
