Below is a clear, examiner-focused analysis of the most common IELTS Speaking Part 3 mistakes, with examples, reasons, and upgraded versions.
❌ Common IELTS Speaking Part 3 Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
1️⃣ Giving Personal or Anecdotal Answers
❌ Mistake: Treating Part 3 like Part 2
“In my life, I think feedback is important because my teacher once told me…”
Why it’s a problem:
Part 3 tests your ability to generalise, analyse, and evaluate, not tell personal stories.
✅ Better (abstract & generalised):
“In a broader sense, feedback plays a crucial role in professional development, as it helps individuals identify areas for improvement.”
Examiner tip:
Use phrases like:
-
in general
-
from a broader perspective
-
on a societal level
2️⃣ Answers That Are Too Short or Underdeveloped
❌ Mistake:
“Yes, ambition is important because it motivates people.”
Why it’s a problem:
Part 3 requires extended, developed responses (usually 3–5 sentences).
✅ Better (developed):
“Ambition is generally seen as a positive trait because it motivates people to set long-term goals and strive for self-improvement. However, if it is not kept in check, it can sometimes lead to unhealthy pressure or burnout.”
Examiner tip:
Think in mini-essays: opinion → reason → consequence / limitation.
3️⃣ No Balance or Evaluation
❌ Mistake: One-sided answers
“Practical skills are more important than theory.”
Why it’s a problem:
Examiners expect nuanced thinking at higher bands.
✅ Better (balanced):
“While practical skills are essential in the workplace, theoretical knowledge lays the foundation for understanding complex concepts. Ideally, education systems should strike a balance between the two.”
Useful structures:
-
While X is important, Y also plays a significant role
-
On the one hand … on the other hand …
4️⃣ Overusing Simple Vocabulary
❌ Mistake:
“People think it is very good and very important.”
Why it’s a problem:
Limits Lexical Resource score.
✅ Better (C1/C2 lexis):
“Many people regard it as highly beneficial and increasingly significant in modern society.”
Upgrade your language with:
-
Collocations (meet expectations, gain experience)
-
Phrasal verbs (carry out, follow through on)
5️⃣ Memorised or “Perfect” Answers
❌ Mistake: Sounding rehearsed or unnatural
“This is a multifaceted issue which cannot be overlooked in contemporary society…”
Why it’s a problem:
Examiners can detect memorisation → penalised for fluency.
✅ Better (natural sophistication):
“It’s quite a complex issue, and there isn’t really a one-size-fits-all answer.”
Rule:
Natural > impressive.
6️⃣ Not Answering the Question Directly
❌ Mistake: Going off-topic
Question: “Why do people change careers?”
Answer: “Education systems are different in many countries…”
Why it’s a problem:
Hurts Task Response.
✅ Better:
Start with a direct answer, then expand:
“People often change careers because their priorities evolve over time. For instance…”
7️⃣ Poor Use of Linking Devices
❌ Mistake: No connectors or overusing and / because.
Why it’s a problem:
Weak Coherence and Cohesion.
✅ Better connectors for Part 3:
-
Moreover / Furthermore
-
As a result
-
That said
-
In contrast
-
To a certain extent
8️⃣ Avoiding Complex Grammar
❌ Mistake: Only simple sentences.
Why it’s a problem:
Limits Grammatical Range.
✅ Better (natural complexity):
“If education systems placed greater emphasis on practical skills, graduates would arguably be better prepared for the workplace.”
Use naturally:
-
Conditionals
-
Relative clauses
-
Passive voice
🎯 Band 8+ Part 3 Formula (Safe & Effective)
Answer structure:
General statement → Explanation → Example or consequence → Balance
Example:
“In general, feedback is essential in professional environments because it allows employees to improve performance. When feedback is constructive, it encourages reflection and long-term development. That said, it needs to be delivered carefully to remain effective.”
IELTS Band 7.5–8.5+ SAMPLE ANSWER
🗣️ IELTS Speaking Part 3 – Discussion Script
Topic: Education, work, and professional development
Examiner:
Why do some people decide to pursue highly specialised fields of study?
Candidate:
Many people choose highly specialised fields because they want to build up expertise in a particular area and gain a competitive edge in the job market. In addition, specialised education often allows individuals to delve deeper into subjects they are genuinely passionate about, rather than spreading themselves too thin across unrelated disciplines.
Examiner:
Do you think practical skills are more important than theoretical knowledge?
Candidate:
I wouldn’t say one should take precedence over the other. In my view, theoretical knowledge lays the foundation for understanding core principles, while practical skills enable people to put theory into practice. Ideally, education systems should aim to strike a balance between the two, as they are equally essential in most professional contexts.
Examiner:
How can people remain motivated when working on long-term goals?
Candidate:
One effective approach is to set achievable milestones and regularly take stock of progress. This helps people stay on track and prevents them from losing sight of their overall objectives. Moreover, having a clear sense of purpose can make it easier to push through periods of low motivation.
Examiner:
What qualities do employers usually look for in successful candidates?
Candidate:
Employers tend to value candidates who can work under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to changing circumstances. Strong communication skills are also highly regarded, as they enable employees to get their point across effectively and work collaboratively with others.
Examiner:
How important is feedback in professional development?
Candidate:
Feedback plays a crucial role because it helps individuals identify areas for improvement and build on existing strengths. When feedback is constructive, it encourages people to reflect on their performance objectively and follow through on concrete steps to enhance their skills.
Examiner:
Do you think ambition is always a positive quality?
Candidate:
Ambition can certainly be beneficial, as it often drives people to strive for excellence and take on greater responsibility. However, if taken too far, it may lead to burnout or unhealthy competition. Therefore, ambition is most effective when it is kept in check and aligned with realistic goals.
