The diagram shows how rainwater is collected for the use of drinking water in an Australian town
The diagram illustrates the process by which an Australian town collects and treats rainwater for use as drinking water.
Overall, rainwater from residential buildings is channelled through a series of filtration and chemical treatment stages before being redistributed to households for safe consumption.
Initially, rainfall is captured on the rooftops of houses and directed into gutters. From there, it flows down vertical pipes into drains located at ground level. This process takes place at every house in the town, after which the collected water is conveyed via a system of underground pipes to a central filtration unit.
At the filtration stage, impurities and debris are removed from the rainwater. The filtered water then travels through pipes to a storage tank, where it is temporarily held. From storage, the water is transferred to a treatment facility. Here, chemicals are added to eliminate any remaining pathogens and ensure the water meets safety standards for human consumption.
Finally, the treated water is pumped back through a network of pipes to individual households throughout the town, where residents can use it for drinking and other domestic purposes.
