The Text (30 gaps)

The morning broke pale and uncertain over the village, the mist 1️⃣ ___ low across the fields. Farmers were already 2️⃣ ___ about their work, while the children, with baskets in hand, hurried to 3️⃣ ___ berries before the sun grew hot.

At the inn by the crossroads, Mr. Wilmot 4️⃣ ___ his usual place by the fire, though the weather scarcely demanded it. He had long since 5️⃣ ___ up the habit of rising early, claiming it gave him time to 6️⃣ ___ an eye on the comings and goings of the road.

That day, however, the road 7️⃣ ___ more than the usual carts and wagons. A stranger, tall and travel-worn, 8️⃣ ___ up at the inn and asked for water. His accent and manner 9️⃣ ___ him apart at once, and it was not long before whispers began to 1️⃣0️⃣ ___ around the room.

He rose from his chair, adjusted his coat, and stepped into the cool night. The air 2️⃣9️⃣ ___ of damp earth and woodsmoke, and the village lay quiet except for the occasional dog that barked as he passed.
