When I left the train at Victoria Station my first impression was of rain and fog and people with umbrellas. A taxi-cab, which (modal verb + use) (1) [input answers="might have been"/] by Lot and his family as they (leave) (2) [input answers="left"/] Sodom and Gomorrah, (take) (3) [input answers="took"/] me and my luggage and (struggle) (4) [input answers="struggled"/] bravely through the traffic. And what traffic and what crowds! I never (believe) (5) [input answers="had never believed"/] my geography teacher when he (tell) (6) [input answers="told"/] us there (be) (7) [input answers="were"/] more people in London than in the whole of my country. I (think) (8) [input answers="thought"/] he just (say) (9) [input answers="had just said"/] it (make) (10) [input answers="to make"/] his lessons more interesting, but I (believe) (11) [input answers="believed"/] him now.
However, I got to my little hotel at last, and the first thing that took my eye was the porter, a big fat man with a round pink face like an advertisement for babies’ food. Then I met the manager. He rubbed his hands all the time as if he (wash) (12) [input answers="was washing"/] them, and (smile) (13) [input answers="smiled"/] without (stop) (14) [input answers="stopping"/] . What he (say) (15) [input answers="said"/] I (modal verb + not understand) (16) [input answers="could not understand"/] though I (learn) (17) [input answers="had learned"/] English at school. I said to myself, “Perhaps he (not speak) (18) [input answers="doesn't speak"/] it very well.” But I told him my name, and he smiled again and told one of the little boys with brass buttons (show) (19) [input answers="to show"/] me up to my room. Ten minutes later I (lie) (20) [input answers="was lying"/] in a hot bath (wash) (21) [input answers="washing"/] off the last dusty reminders of the Continent; another ten minutes and I (be) (22) [input answers="was"/] under the bedclothes and fast asleep.
When I woke up next morning, I felt hungrier than I ever (feel) (23) [input answers="had ever felt"/] in my life before; I seemed (have) (24) [input answers="to have"/] a hole instead of a stomach. I dressed quickly and hurried down to the dining-room. It was a big room with six tall windows and the ugliest wallpaper I ever (see) (25) [input answers="had ever seen"/] . However, I (tell) (26) [input answers="had been told"/] that the hotel was not beautiful but that you better (feed) (27) [input answers="were better fed"/] there than in any other hotel in London; and that was what I (want) (28) [input answers="wanted"/] just then.
The waiter (come) (29) [input answers="came"/] (hurry) (30) [input answers="hurrying"/] up. Before I (come) (31) [input answers="came"/] downstairs I (prepare) (32) [input answers="had prepared"/] myself very carefully for what I (modal verb +say) (33) [input answers="must say"/] . I (look) (34) [input answers="had looked"/] three times in my dictionary (make) (35) [input answers="to make"/] sure that “breakfast” really (mean) (36) [input answers="meant"/] “breakfast”. I (try) (37) [input answers="had tried"/] to get the right pronunciation and (stand) (38) [input answers="had stood"/] in front of a mirror and (twist) (39) [input answers="twisted"/] my mouth until it (ache) (40) [input answers="ached"/] .
