The waiter asked me something I (modal verb + not understand) (1)  [input answers="could not understand"/] , but I (speak) (2)  [input answers="spoke"/]  only my one prepared word, “BREAKFAST”. He looked at me in a (puzzle) (3)  [input answers="puzzled"/]  way, so I repeated it. Still he did not understand. It was unbelievable that English people didn’t understand their own language. The waiter shook his head, bowed and went away, but he came back in a minute and brought the manager with him. I (feel) (4)  [input answers="was feeling"/]  slightly (annoy) (5)  [input answers="annoyed"/] , but I said, “ BREAKFAST”. I never (see) (6)  [input answers="had never seen"/]  such (surprise) (7)  [input answers="surprised"/]  faces in my life. So perhaps I (not pronounce) (8)  [input answers="did not pronounce"/]  it correctly after all.
A little later the waiter (bring) (9)  [input answers="brought"/]  a tray with tea, toast, butter and marmalade, enough (feed) (10)  [input answers="to feed"/]  a small army, and went away. But I was hungry and I left nothing. When the waiter came back I thought his face showed a little surprise, but you never (modal verb + tell) (11)  [input answers="can never tell"/]  what a waiter’s face really (show) (12)  [input answers="shows"/] . In another minute he brought another tray with a huge portion of bacon and eggs. He (modal verb + misunderstand) (13)  [input answers="must have misunderstood"/]  me, but I thought it was no use (explain) (14)  [input answers="explaining"/]  to people who don’t understand their own language, so I just set to work on the bacon and eggs and ate on steadily, (wonder) (15)  [input answers="wondering"/]  all the time whether I possibly (modal verb + clear) (16)  [input answers="could possibly clear"/]  that plate.
Well, I (finish) (17)  [input answers="finished"/]  the bacon and eggs, and just (try) (18)  [input answers="was just trying"/]  to get up out of the chair when here was the waiter again with another tray. This time it was a whole fish in a thick white sauce. Surely this (modal verb + be) (19)  [input answers="must be"/]  joke, I thought; but before I (modal verb + tell) (20)  [input answers="could tell"/]  him anything, he (put) (21)  [input answers="had put"/]  down the tray and (go) (22)  [input answers="gone"/]  away. There was nothing for it but (face) (23)  [input answers="to face"/]  that fish with what little courage I (leave) (24)  [input answers="had left"/] , but all the time I (eat) (25)  [input answers="was eating"/]  it I (try) (26)  [input answers="was trying"/]  to think of what I (modal verb + say) (27)  [input answers="could say"/]  to that waiter when he returned. I (bring) (28)  [input answers="had brought"/]  my grammar book with me in case of need.
And at last I (make) (29)  [input answers="had made"/]  up two sentences in my mind (avoid) (30)  [input answers="avoiding"/]  verbs as much as possible. I told him that only a man who (die) (31)  [input answers="was dying"/]  of hunger (modal verb + eat) (32)  [input answers="could eat"/]  such a breakfast. He (modal verb + understand) (33)  [input answers="must have understood"/]  me at once. I felt very proud of my English, especially “(die) (34)  [input answers="dying"/]  of hunger”. I never (see) (35)  [input answers="have never seen"/]  anyone (clear) (36)  [input answers="clear"/]  away the empty plates as fast as he did. But in a minute he (be) (37)  [input answers="was"/]  back again with a big plateful of sandwiches. This was too much. I got up and made my way to my room. I never (believe) (38)  [input answers="believed"/]  until then that any meal (modal verb + defeat) (39)  [input answers="could defeat"/]  me, but on that day I (meet) (40)  [input answers="met"/]  my Waterloo.
