It was quite an emotional day, I [must/must to/will] ... admit. A few of the younger clerks just [wished/have wished/had wished] ... me good luck and [hoped/have hoped/had hoped] ... I would be happy in my new job. Some of the farewells from older collegues were quite touching; one said I [had/have/was] ... been a kind of a model for him, [which/who/if] ... I [found/find/have found] ... rather nice. The managing director made a speech at lunchtime, the usual gushing stuff about all I [had/have/being] ... done for the firm, how much I had [contributed/had contributed/have contributed] ... to its ethos and how the place [wouldn't/won't/doesn't] ... be the same without me. Fortunately he omitted to recall a conversation in which he [had called/called/has called] ... me an incompetent idiot who [didn't/hadn't/wasn't] ... deserve to be working in a company as good as his.
When it [was/had been/has been] ...  my turn to respond, I couldn't believe the clichés I [came/have come/had come] ... with: about what a pleasure it [had been/has been/was] ... to work in a firm that [had/was having/has had] ... such high standards and [could/can/had been able] ... stand comparison with any company in the country; about how I [would/could/will] ... miss everybody and how I really [appreciated/appreciate/will appreciate] ... their kindness in presenting me with a pen.
The cleaning lady was the last person to say goodbye to me. She just said she'd always [regarded/regards/regard] ... me as a gentleman. I thought that [was/is/has been] ... the most sweet.
