As I was passing near Calverton Hall, where my niece was at school, I (think) (1)  [input answers="thought"/]  I (modal verb + give) (2)  [input answers="might give"/]  her a surprise visit. I (turn) (3)  [input answers="had turned"/]  off the road, and (go) (4)  [input answers="was going"/]  slowly down the long, tree-lined drive, when I first (see) (5)  [input answers="saw"/]  the main school building. It was a large Victorian house (make) (6)  [input answers="made"/]  of dark stone (set) (7)  [input answers="set"/]  in a large park. It (strike) (8)  [input answers="struck"/]  me that, there was something very sinister about the place, and I (notice) (9)  [input answers="noticed"/]  that it was strangely silent. I even (modal verb + not hear) (10)  [input answers="could not even hear"/]  any voices, and there (be) (11)  [input answers="was"/]  nobody (see) (12)  [input answers="to be seen"/] .
After (park) (13)  [input answers="parking"/]  the car in front of the main building, I (go) (14)  [input answers="went"/]  up the steps. The door (be) (15)  [input answers="was"/]  open, so I (go) (16)  [input answers="went"/]  in. There (seem) (17)  [input answers="seemed"/]  to be no one around, so I (think) (18)  [input answers="thought"/]  it (be) (19)  [input   answers="would be"/]  best to wait until someone (come) (20)  [input answers="came"/] . I (go) (21)  [input answers="went"/]  over and (touch) (22)  [input answers="touched"/]  a radiator to see if the central heating (work) (23)  [input answers="was working"/] . It (not work) (24)  [input answers="wasn't working"/] , which (seem) (25)  [input answers="seemed"/]  odd, as it (be) (26)  [input answers="was"/]  already late November and winter (set) (27)  [input answers="had set"/]  in.
A few moments later, I (hear) (28)  [input answers="heard"/]  footsteps (come) (29)  [input answers="coming"/]  down one of the stairs to the main hall. Soon an elderly lady, who (turn) (30)  [input answers="turned"/]  out to be the headmistress, (appear) (31)  [input answers="appeared"/]  and (give) (32)  [input answers="gave"/]  me a particularly hostile stare. When I (explain) (33)  [input answers="explained"/]  to her that I (come) (34)  [input answers="had come"/]  (visit) (35)  [input answers="to visit"/]  my niece, she (say) (36)  [input answers="said"/]  coldly: “It is against the rules for pupils (visit) (37)  [input answers="to be visited"/]  by relatives unless a request (make) (38)  [input answers="is made"/]  in writing at least three weeks in advance. I (be) (39)  [input answers="would be"/]  grateful therefore if you kindly (leave) (40)  [input answers="left"/]  at once”.
